Villarreal 2-0 Almeria

Moi Gomez created the most dazzling moments for Villarreal in the opening moments of the game, a thorn in the side of the Almeria defence as he weaved his way through their lines on several occasions. The 20-year-old also had the first clear chance of the encounter in the 7th minute, striking well from a ball laid back by Cani, but denied by a good stop from Ruben.

Cani almost caught out the visiting keeper with a floated cross-shot, that just whizzed beyond the upright, before Almeria started to show some attacking purpose of their own, particularly dangerous with their crossing from either flank. In the 19th minute Ximo tested Asenjo in the Villarreal goal with a stinging shot from distance, that was tipped away for a corner. After that, Edgar had a good opportunity, but was likewise denied by Asenjo.

Play switched the other way and in the 23rd minute it was Villarreal who opened the scoring. Mario bursting forward to strike powerfully, but after that was blocked by Ruben in the Almeria goal, Uche was there to apply the finish.

Villarreal were keen to extend their advantage and werenít letting up with their pressure. Giovani was denied by Ruben, then Uche broke through in the 32nd minute and whilst he had the beating of the Almeria keeper, defender Mauro appeared with a perfectly timed intervention. After another chance from Giovani was saved, the home side had to make an unplanned change. Cani was feeling the effects of an earlier knock and couldnít continue, so Cheryshev came on in his place in the 38th minute.

Almeriawere the stronger side in the closing minutes of the first-half, with Edgar forcing a good save from Asenjo, but Villarreal just about merited their lead at the interval.

A second change came during half-time and as play resumed for the second-half, Víctor Ruiz had replaced Dorado in defence. Play was a little scrappy though and neither could take control of the ball, as passes didnít find their targets and possession was quickly traded from one side to the other.

Almeria made their first change in the 57th minute, with Soriano a straight swap on for Thomas in midfield. The visitors couldnít make the most of a corner that quickly followed and the game became more of an uphill struggle for them, when Villarreal scored their second goal in the 59th minute. Uche with a poacherís finish, after Ruben had repelled two efforts that came his way, but helpless to stop the Nigerian striker with the third attempt.

Following a good chance for Villarreal to scored a third in the 64th minute, as Bruno headed powerfully and was denied by Ruben, Almería started to push forward more, but without success. Francisco opted to shuffle his pack in the 67th minute with a double change for Almeria and his last options, sending on Corona and Teerasil, for Hemed and Azeez. Villarreal looked more likely to add to their tally and after a one-two with Giovani, Cheryshev really should have done better with his finish, a fraction wide of the post.

Two long-range efforts from Almería were no problem for Asenjo, but in the 72nd minute he was given trouble by an effort from Edgar, which slipped his grasp and needed Bruno to clear. In the midst of a flurry of yellow cards from referee Clos Gomez, Villarreal made their final change, offering Jonathan Dos Santos some important minutes, replacing Moi Gomez, who had made a great effort all game.

The final ten minutes saw lots of chances, first with Giovani firing just wide from a free-kick. Then at the other end, Corona was unlucky after his well struck effort was no more than inches wide of the post for Almeria, unable to gain them a consolation. More chances for Villarreal then as Cheryshev and Giovani again came close before the final whistle, but the points were already safe and Marcelinoís men worthy of their victory.
